Beetroot or Beet is a plant very rich in nutrients whose leaves and roots are eatable. Its leaves taste bitter whereas the roots are sweet. Typically, the Beetroot are deep purple in appearance but we also have other varieties that are colored gold and white. Beetroot has gained a lot of popularity nowadays because of the many health benefits that they provide hence becoming part of our lifestyle is a necessity. One of these health benefits of beetroot is its help in improving the brain, therefore, minimizing brain disease chances.
In the elderly people, there is a decrease in oxygen that flows to the brain. When the elderly take beetroot in their daily lifestyle diet, the high nitrate concentration in the beetroots increases the flow of blood in the brain due to the widening of blood vessels. The blood vessels widening is caused by the nitrates. The nitrates give the brain an improved health and more stamina enabling the brain to fight up to
around 16% of dementia. As the blood flow increases, oxygen flow also increases as the oxygen is carried in the blood
to those parts of the brain that are encountering defiance. One of the health benefits of beetroot here is to slow down the onset of dementia.
Additionally, one of the other benefits of beetroot being included in our lifestyle is to increase the memory. Beetroots are among the best sources of plant choline. Choline is beneficial for the formation of neurotransmitter acetylcholine which increases our brain memory.
The benefits of beetroot healthy lifestyle are the attainment of better moods and mental health also. The beetroots contain two components of beetroot tryptophan and beetroot betaine. The two compounds are quite essential for the improvement of mental health. The component betaine as the ability to cure depression while tryptophan soothes our minds.
Despite the many great benefits of beetroot that are necessary if we make beetroot part of our lifestyle diet, it also has some side effects which can be avoided. When the beetroots are consumed excessively it leads to kidney stones. The beetroot is also made up of oxalates. When the oxalates accumulate, they hinder calcium absorption. As a result of this hindrance, there is the formation of stones in an individuals’ kidneys. The other effect is the change ones’ color of the stool to dark resulting from the beetroot pigment. It can also change the color of urine to pink. But effects on stool and urine color normal and harmless. The effect resulting to kidney stones can be avoided not over-consuming the beetroot. Due to the significant benefits of beetroot to us, it is important to make it part of our lifestyle diet.
