A global panic has begun with the emergence of an epidemic caused by a virus called COVID-19 (commonly known as Coronavirus). The virus is currently prevailing in 162 countries and territories across the world, and a cruise ship harbored in Japan. Affecting more than 1.8 million people across the world, COVID-19 has been the cause of more than 7000 Deaths across the world.
Coronavirus had its origin in a Chinese district named Wuhan where a patient with pneumonia of unknown cause was detected and brought to the WHO County Office in China on 31st December. An outbreak of the novel virus was observed in China in January which later spread to many countries. The outbreak was later declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on 30th January 2020.
The COVID-19 virus is known to have transmitted from Bats and the source of origin was reported to be a Wet Market in Wuhan where various kinds of farmed and exotic animals are kept in cages and sold. The virus known as COVID-19 comes from the family of viruses that range from the common cold to SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) and MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome). The origin was thought to be Bats since the virus SARS that has been the root cause of the previous epidemic in 2002 was closely related to bat viruses.
China currently has the highest number of affected people by the coronavirus with the number crossing 80000. It has also been the number one country in the number of deaths due to the epidemic. The next in line is Italy where the number of affected recently rose to 27000 and the total number of deaths is more than 2100. Iran seems to be on number three where the number of affected crossed 14000 and the death toll is close to 850.
Spain, Korea, Germany, France and, the USA reported the number of cases as 9000+, 8300+, 7500+, 6600+, and 4700+. The death toll in all these places is currently low but the number is likely to increase in the coming weeks. India has reported the number of confirmed cases to be 137 and more than 50,000 members are under community surveillance. Only three deaths have been reported in India so far and countrywide measures have been in effect to prevent the spreading of the virus.
A vaccine for the trial has been invented in the US for which 45 healthy adult participants were selected to receive two injections of various doses in a six-week time frame. A further follow-up would be required to inspect the reactions the virus is causing in the immune system of these healthy beings which might delay the distribution of the vaccine.
Meanwhile, people are advised to stay indoors, and follow some health protocols like washing hands, using sanitizers, etc., to prevent the contraction of the virus and its spread. Italy is under a countrywide shutdown and many countries restricted travel in and out of the country. Other countries restricted mass gatherings and shut down schools, offices, malls and other places where the presence of a large number of people is required to prevent escalation.
